TIE Living Lab aims at operating as a smart platform to stimulate technology innovation and innovative entrepreneurship for local development in the global scenarios, by leveraging on talents, technology, collaboration, collective intelligence, and networking, in the strategic perspective to exploit and valorise research outcomes, technological assets and scientific results.

Thus, TIE Living Lab acts as a bridge that virtuously connects civil society, academy, businesses, markets, government and institutions, aiming at helping entrepreneurs overcome the valley of death, and at fostering innovation and entrepreneurship.

Description

TIE Living Lab is hosted by DHITECH (the Apulian High Tech District, in Italy)and stems from the research project VINCENTE (Virtual collective INtelligenCe ENvironment to develop sustainable Technology Entrepreneurship ecosystem), co-funded by the Italian Ministry of Education, University and Research.

Currently, TIE Living Lab involves the main Universities within the region (University of Salento, Polytechnic of Bari and University of Bari), the Italian National Research Council, the Municipality and the Province of Lecce, a number of high tech companies (i.e.ENGINEERING Ingegneria Informatica, Exprivia, Links Management & Technology, ST Microelectronics, Avio Aereo, Alenia Aermacchi, Tozzi Renewable Energy, Ospedale San Raffaele), and several representative bodies such as Confindustria Lecce (the provincial association of entrepreneurs), Osservatorio Banche Imprese (the regional consortium of banks and entrepreneurs), NETVAL (the Italian association of Universities and public research centres for market exploitation of research results), and ADI (the Italian association of PhD students and post-doc).

The TIE Living Lab mission is to conceive and promote, in an open and collaborative way, a personalizable ecosystem of actors and stakeholders, relationships and resources, actions and initiatives to support potential entrepreneurs and companies in cultivating innovative ideas and entrepreneurial projects as well as developing entrepreneurial competencies and attitudes.

By favouring the arising of ideas and the exchange of knowledge and experiences, TIE Living Lab enables the open dialogue among scientists, researchers, companies, entrepreneurs and investors, citizen and associations, local authorities, universities and public institutions to jointly conceive, design, and realize innovative solutions and entrepreneurial projects.

These outcomes and flows contribute to the diffusion of an entrepreneurial culture and mindset in the entire region, in order to activate economic, social and cultural development processes which foster territorial growth and increase the attractiveness of the region itself.

In its starting phase, TIE Living Lab is focusing on three technological domains in which DHITECH operates:

  • Tissue engineering for regenerative medicine;
  • Molecular nanotechnologies for environment and health;
  • ICT for product and service innovation.

In the near future, other domains will be added by embracing new suggestions and requests coming from external actors and stakeholders interested in participating to the TIE Living Lab.

References and Track Record

The incubation of TIE Living Lab is very recent and the initiatives currently activated have been designed together with their main targets. Indeed, a series of meetings were held with potential entrepreneurs, innovative companies and associations in order to better understand their needs in terms of innovation and entrepreneurship. After several meetings and discussions, the TIE Living Lab is going to launch three main initiatives:

  • Open Lab, which targets mainly innovative technology-based SMEs, start-ups and entrepreneurs that are motivated and willing to present products, services, research results and prototypes to large communities of companies and institutions potentially interested in a possible adoption, collaboration, and/or market exploitation;
  • Co-Lab, which mainly helps and supports innovative companies and associations in activating and undertaking innovation processes by meeting, engaging and working with a community of experts, or potential users and adopters, around a new idea or prototype,and collecting feedbacks and comments useful to finalize and commercialize the outcome;
  • Idea Accelerator, which targets mainly young talented people, researchers and entrepreneurs who have innovative ideas (also in their starting phase) and want to transform – leveraging the TIE Living Lab mentoring and support coming from experts and partner companies – into real and ambitious entrepreneurial projects.

To implement these initiatives, the TIE Living Lab relies on three main categories of value-generating resources: both entrepreneurial and technical competencies of the TIE Living Lab members and stakeholders (human capital); the networks of relationships which originate from the collaboration among talented people and companies, researchers and technologists, investors and public authorities who are already committed to provide feedback and support to high-potential initiatives(social capital); the infrastructures and laboratories of DHITECH partners and stakeholders, including spaces for co-design and co-working (structural capital).

These three initiatives are going to be launched next September through the web site www.tielab.eu, which will provide updated info about their progress and follow-up.
