- about us
Living Labs at GATE 21
Gate 21 is is a meeting point for cities, industry and research in Greater Copenhagen. Together with our partner organisations, our team of around 35 employees strive to make Greater Copenhagen the leading region in the world for green transformation and growth. Our strategy is based on the use of regional and local demand to develop, demonstrate and deploy new energy and resource efficient solutions to climate and energy. As of spring 2015, Gate 21 has set out a new goal to use the establishment of Living Labs as a core method. The goal is to establish a number of Living Labs, which together can help raise the profile of Greater Copenhagen. To handle this new exploration, we have entered EnoLL to share ideas and experiences. Complex problems needs new, sometimes revolutionary ideas, whiles innovation often comes from iterative approaches and user interaction. ENoLL connects us to innovators, policy frontrunners and start-ups and helps us benchmark our own Living Lab and share what we have.
Gate 21 has already created significant results and international attention with its first Living Lab – DOLL that focuses on lighting and smart urban technologies. Other Living Labs are being scoped and planned. Dialogues have stareted on a second Living Lab – LAUST, with focus on demonstrating technologies and methods to prevent and mitigate noise pollution. Mobility management and climate adaption are other areas of exploration within the Living Lab strategt of Gate 21.
DOLL - National Green Lab for Lighting & Smart Urban Technologies
DOLL, Danish Outdoor Lighting Lab, is Gate 21 first Living Lab. DOLL has since its opening in September 2014 become Europe´s largest showroom and outdoor lab for lighting and smart city solutions. In the suburbs of Copenhagen, an industry park has become Europe’s foremost arena for manufacturers and suppliers to present and test the newest lighting and Smart City solutions. Technologically, DOLL Living Lab consists of 14 kilometer of road with state-of-the-art lighting infrastructure and a control room where different management systems are demonstrated. The benchmarking opportunity of different technological solutions set up in such a vicinity of each other make the lab unique.
In DOLL Living Lab, we exhibit the latest solutions for outdoor lighting with LED technology, intelligent management and integration of Smart City technology, sensors and Wi-Fi, providing new opportunities to improve and streamline municipal services to citizens and businesses. The role of DOLL is primarily to support decision makers and city planners when deciding on outdoor lighting and Smart City solutions. Secondly to enable private providers of urban infrastructure, components and services to demonstrate and test new technologies and solutions in a 1:1 scale environment.
DOLL also offers test and modelling possibilities, DOLL Quality Lab offers state-of-the-art scientific test facilities to characterize light sources, fixtures, lamps and lighting components, whereas DOLL Virtual Lab make 3D-computer models making it possible to program luminaires’ and sockets’ effect, distribution, reflection and glare. Important projects for DOLL is twofold; 1) SUS – Smart Urban Services platform will deploy sensor networks and communication systems in the urban service sectors, 2) Lighting Metropolis a flagship project in Greater Copenhagen, combining the strengths of eastern Denmark and southern Sweden.
LAUST - Living Lab for Urban Noise Abatement
Together with Gate 21, a number of municipalities in Denmark has taken the lead in the fight against traffic noise. LAUST - Living Lab for Urban Noise Abatement, is currently in its initial phase and will during the next two years gather a large number of municipalities, companies, research institutions, authorities and citizens to investigate, test and develop innovative solutions, that reduce traffic noise and promotes quality of life. The Southern coastline of Copenhagen is afflicted by traffic noise mainly from heavy traffic on throughways and train lines.
Within the coming Living Lab, solutions will be tested and demonstrated on a 1:1 scale, companies will be challenged to innovate and cooperate with the many relevant Living Lab stakeholders, and get an opportunity to display their solutions.
LAUST focus areas:
• Noise measurement and health impact
• Socio-economic assessments
• Reducing traffic noise from the source, focusing on innovative solutions
• Reducing traffic noise through noise barriers with a focus on integrated solutions
• Communication and agenda setting
• Data collection, analysis and smart use of data for planning
Smart Mobility in the Business Areas of 'Loop City'
The project 'Smart Mobility in the Business Areas of Loop City' aims at creating the best, most coherent and smart transport solutions in relation to the future light rail along the Ring Road 3 surrounding Copenhagen. The light rail, which is built in the period 2015-2021, will cover an urban area of 30 kilometer from the city Ishoej in the south to Lyngby in the north. Eventually the project aims at establishing a living lab for smart mobility solutions in 'Loop City’.
